The Hidden Gift of Uncertainty

Every fear is rooted in a possible future reality.

The canvases of our lives—career, finances, family, friendships and romance—are never fully painted. Because of that, anxiety loves to pick up the brush and palette 🎨 and fill in the blank spaces with frightening possibilities... if we let it.

It's no surprise, then, that people crave certainty. We want guarantees that we'll find our ideal career, meet the right partner, achieve our goals, or simply know that everything will work out.

But what if uncertainty isn't the enemy?

What if it's actually one of the things that makes life meaningful?

A concept from Timequake by Kurt Vonnegut illustrates this beautifully.

When an earthquake happens, the ground shakes because of movement beneath the Earth's surface. Vonnegut imagines something even stranger: a "Timequake"—a break in the fabric of space-time.

Imagine being transported back into your childhood as the person you are today. You know everything that's about to happen, but you have absolutely no control over it. Every conversation, every decision, every success and every mistake unfolds exactly as it did the first time. You relive your entire life on rails until you eventually arrive back at the present moment.

For me, that sounds like one of the bleakest experiences imaginable.

There would be no genuine choice.

No discovery.

No possibility.

No freedom.

Ironically, this would be life with complete certainty.

It's uncertainty that allows us to become co-authors of our own story. Reality writes part of the script; we write the rest through the choices we make. We don't control everything that happens to us, but we do influence what happens next.

Of course, life isn't completely unpredictable.

You can create a compelling vision for your future, work consistently towards it and prepare for many of the challenges you're likely to face. You can develop skills, build resilience and stack the odds in your favour.

But the script is never fully written.

And that's a good thing.

Uncertainty is what makes life feel alive.

It's what makes meeting someone new exciting.

It's what makes taking a chance on a new career meaningful.

It's what makes travel feel like an adventure.

It's what makes personal growth possible.

If every outcome were already fixed, life would lose much of its wonder.

Uncertainty also reminds us that we're all human. Every person you meet carries hopes, fears and vulnerabilities about the future. In many ways, this shared uncertainty is one of our greatest connectors. It creates opportunities for compassion, friendship and support.

It also allows us to learn.

Perhaps you've been through a painful breakup before. That experience doesn't guarantee you'll never be hurt again, but it gives you wisdom that helps you navigate future challenges with greater confidence. The future remains uncertain, but you become stronger within it.

So rather than fighting uncertainty, try welcoming it.

It's as much a part of life as rain is part of the weather.

Keep moving forward anyway.

Trust your ability to adapt, learn and grow.

Your future may not unfold exactly as you imagine, but you can still build a life that aligns with your values, brings you fulfilment and feels deeply meaningful.

After all, if everything were certain, there'd be no adventure left to live.
